Stuck in a Rainy, Drought-Quenching Rut

Our pattern over the past two weeks continues for about another week to ten days. This allows western Oklahoma to play catchup on much-needed rainfall. Terrible timing for wheat harvesting but welcomed nonetheless.
The drought update always lags a week behind but as you can see there has been some improvement in western Oklahoma. Rainfall amounts over the last 30 days have been as much as 200-300 percent above normal! Some areas received 6″ or more in just a week.

The upper pattern still keeps an omega high centered across southern Canada which allows a stagnant flow across the southern US. As a result, these weak upper lows move across the desert SW and provide weak lift across Oklahoma. This leads to daily rainfall in the form of isolated to widely scattered showers and storms. Sometimes they will occur at night, or early morning, or mid-day. There is no rhyme or reason and nothing to designate particular areas or exact timing, which makes making outdoor plans difficult. At least the weaker wind shear across Oklahoma keeps the severe weather to a minimum as shown by the SPC.

Notice the forecasted rain pattern during the week across Oklahoma with the European data below. There are several dry hours each day and not everyone will get wet, but at least it helps us going into our summer months. Be sure to use my free weather app, ATsWeatherToGo to track the rain. It will also alert you when lightning is in the area to get the kiddos out of the pool or off the practice field.

Now all good things must come to an end, and the American model is developing a massive 600 dm ridge centered across New Mexico by June 20th. Should this happen, this will reverse the wet pattern out west and crank up the heat and humidity. We’ll still get some storm complexes rolling off the Colorado high plains across KS and N/E OK in this pattern. Time will tell if this sets up in 2 weeks.

Until then check out these pleasant temperatures for the OKC metro area!
