Severe Storm Season Ends and Summer Heat Builds
Our severe weather season in Oklahoma typically runs from mid-March to mid-June. Sure we get an occasional event outside of that window, but things start to settle down statewide. This week will indicate that as we’ll see slim opportunities for storms. The heat will start to build throughout the week and remain with us over the next three months. Get those pools and sunscreen ready!
Speaking of heat, it was hot hot hot this past Saturday! However, that nice cold front that came through early Sunday made a big difference. I hope to see a few more like this in June.
The Jetstream animation shows a weak upper low moving across the southern TX panhandle and into W TX on Monday and Tuesday. That will trigger storms across SW OK on Tuesday. Another wave will move through on Sunday with another potential round of storms.
The Storm Prediction Center and the AI model don’t indicate much activity around Oklahoma this week. The aforementioned disturbances will trigger rain on Tuesday and Saturday night/Sunday morning as indicated by the model output below. The rain event across the southwest quadrant of Oklahoma could produce brief flash flooding as the HRRR model indicates up to 4 inches of rainfall during the day.
Enjoy Monday and Tuesday while you can! Those days will have the lowest humidity statewide and cooler temperatures. Any time you see dewpoints in the 50s this time of year that’s a good thing. Once they creep back into the 60s and then 70s, that’s when it becomes very uncomfortable and heat index values become a problem in the body cooling down.
The OKC temperature trend is on the way up over the next few days, resting at our typical hot and humid conditions for June.
