Heat Returns After an Amazing Summer Break
Last week’s cold front really changed our weather around Oklahoma. The temperatures were absolutely amazing on Friday and thanks to rain and clouds, were very comfortable on Saturday and Sunday too. The rainfall got really out of hand as 24-hour records were broken. Some places ended up with 10+” and flash flooding! This week we’ll slowly increase the temperatures and after Monday, limit the rainfall.
Rain amounts Saturday night and Sunday were wild! Take a look at the Oklahoma mesonet data.
For this week, the Jetstream will show a return of the ridge overhead rebuilding but may end up shifting back to the NW again. That is thanks to a weak upper trough that will swing through the nation’s midsection and bring in a weak cold front on Thursday. This should trigger a few showers and storms. However, it’s not going to get as cool as last week’s. The upper disturbances may rotate through again over the weekend so that we could squeeze out at least a few more showers, but I’m not expecting a repeat.
Before that pattern sets up, we’ll get one last go of it tonight and tomorrow with additional showers and storms. Our hi-res models indicate that NE OK may get the highest totals for early Monday morning. Storms will start out west and travel east overnight. A few additional storms may develop early Monday evening, but that will be it until Thursday.
The temperature trend will be back on the hot side for August. Watch out for that extra mugginess that will lead to higher heat index values thanks to the recent rainfall. -AT
