Charter Communications acquired Cox Communications in a $34.5 billion transaction, renaming the corporate parent entity Cox Communications to honor the Cox family legacy (who retains a 26% ownership stake), while placing Charter's leadership in charge. Residential and business services are consolidated nationwide under the consumer brand Spectrum, which utilizes "fiber-powered internet" marketing to describe a Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) network. Because this technology relies on a fiber backbone but uses legacy coaxial cable lines for the final stretch to the home, customers positioned at the end of a neighborhood node remain highly vulnerable to upstream line noise, signal degradation from amplifiers, and heavily bottlenecked upload speeds compared to 100% fiber-to-the-home networks. In other words, if you currently have Cox, it likely won't improve, and if you are thinking about going to Spectrum (Cox), it's not "pure fiber" and suffers from the old coax lines. I left Cox years ago and switched to AT&T Fiber. Best decision I ever made. Cox had to make this decision to survive in this highly competitive space.
