Big Cool Down and Wet Labor Day Weekend
A strong cold front will drop our temperatures out of the 90s and 100s into the 70s and 80s along with a return to widespread rainfall.
The upper flow is stagnant across the Southern Plains but a strong upper low will move across the Northern Plains on Thursday. This will drive a substantial cold front southward Thursday night.
The cold front will trigger rain across the state Thursday night and Friday, so keep the umbrellas handy. Although there will be isolated showers around during the day on Saturday, the next widespread wave of rain should hold off until Saturday night. From there, things get a little messy. Models are divided on whether we see off/on widespread rainfall on Sunday and Monday or if we’re back to just isolated activity each day. The reason is because that front will stall out and the upper portion of it around the 850mb layer (3000 ft) will hang across the I-40 corridor. That can cause additional lift and development. There is a possibility with the rain Saturday night that it gets a better push south closer to the Red River. Regardless, you’ll have to plan on at least a little rain affecting your holiday weekend plans. So adjust accordingly.
At least the change will bring welcomed relief as far as temperatures go! I’ve posted the high temperatures for Saturday through Monday along with the OKC Temperature trend below. Enjoy your weekend! -AT
