Break From the Heat with Some Rain
We have a pattern change for this week that cools things a bit, plus it brings at least a few showers and storms.
Over the weekend we saw another MCS event bring in some torrential rainfall Saturday night. That gave us an amazing Sunday! The map below doesn’t show some of the very isolated extreme amounts of rain upwards of 4-6″. Too much in such a short period. The drought hasn’t really changed much since our last update.

This week the upper ridge stays anchored across the N Plains and Upper Midwest. This allows a weak upper low to drift across the Red River Valley from E to W. You can watch this counter clockwise motion in the Jetstream animation below. It’s effects will dwindle as get into our Saturday.
As a result of the upper low we will see isolated shower and weak storm activity across the state. Anywhere is fair game, but the majority of the activity will fall across the southern half of the state. Tap the animation below to give you an idea.
Rainfall totals aren’t much in the general sense, but there will always be an isolated amount that exceeds the smoothed average.
The temperatures in this pattern typically run below normal as the animation shows. Once we get away from the influence, they’ll heat back up over the weekend.

A quick side note about my app. There’s been a lot of development changes that is causing some functionality issues. You may have noticed or experienced them. The radar animation is not as smooth as it used to be and the alert inbox wasn’t storing everything that came in, which gave the impression you weren’t receiving push notifications regarding storm activity. I’ve removed the inbox for now, so don’t swipe away the notifications until you view them. The arrows that show the hail are causing some issues. I replaced them with a different type that helped the radar animation but it didn’t have the hail information in those boxes, so I put them back. In the end, the app is being redesigned a bit and it’s probably going to take a month or so to get all of these little bugs out. So please be patient. When the updates are ready they’ll push out automatically to your device as long as you have auto-updates enabled. -AT
