Multiple Rounds of Winter Weather to Hit Oklahoma

We finally have a very exciting week of winter weather. There will be a little bit for everyone. A cold rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow. Several rounds will move through the state not only this week but also one or two the following week as more arctic air invades the country.
There are some ways you can prepare for this week’s weather.
The Jetstream shows 3 upper-level disturbances to move through this week (brighter red/yellow colors). The first will arrive on Monday/Tuesday, the second on Wednesday/Thursday, and the final one on Saturday. The first is deprived of significant cold air. Wednesday appears to be the highest winter precipitation output. Saturday’s might be deprived of significant moisture. The ones beyond this week we’ll discuss at another time.

As moisture returns, light rain will develop Monday and continue into Tuesday. Parts of N/NW Oklahoma will transition into snow for late Monday and into Tuesday but amounts should be fairly light. The rain/snow line will run roughly east/west along Highway 412. As colder air arrives snow will dominate the north, but a winter mix of freezing rain and sleet will occur across central Oklahoma and the I-44 corridor Wednesday. This will cause some icy roadways by morning, so travel is discouraged at that time. Additional light snow will move through Thursday and across the eastern half of Oklahoma on Saturday.

There is some ensemble support for snow in Oklahoma City this week and beyond as indicated in the chart. Otherwise, expect some decent snows with this system in northern Oklahoma to incredible amounts in Kansas and Missouri. Most of that will fall on Wednesday. In addition to the snow, significant icing will occur as well. It’s still too early to get exact snowfall totals but the model animation will show you the range of possibilities.

During this cold pattern, multiple waves of arctic air will move into the US and continue through the 3rd week of February. Our coldest mornings as a result will be Thursday and Sunday this week.
